As busy mums, we have nowhere near enough time any more to spend on ourselves. Gone are the days when I’d enjoy mixing up my own face mask and soaking in the bath for an hour, followed by painting my nails. Once I became a mum I barely had time to have a shower, let alone think about applying makeup to leave the house.
Whilst i’ve had to adjust my beauty routine since becoming a mum, it is still possible to transform from shabby chic with minimal time and effort..even with interruptions. If you want to look good, feel great and confident- you’ll make it happen. Here’s how I do it:
1. BACK TO BASICS
Lets start on the inside.. how’s your nutrition? Eat well, limit alcohol (it’s ageing on the skin), try to exercise and drink water to ensure your hair and skin are looking their best to create the best base for minimal makeup. Lemon juice in hot water first thing in the morning is a great detox and metabolism boost for the day.
Skin care routine:
For someone who has used a wide range of skincare I recommend looking at anti-aging skincare products as an investment, because they work. I’m a person who used to love buying product after product from the skincare isle in the supermarket and never saw any real results. If you refer to my other blog on my skincare routine, i’ve recently been using the Aspect range and I’m extremely impressed would be an understatement.
2. NIPPLE CREAM WHERE?
YES nipple cream..on your lips. Slather it on at night before bed or as you’re putting on your nipples after breast feeding. You’ll thank me later!
3. FAKE IT DON’T BAKE IT
Gone are the days of waiting 8 hours for your oompa loompa looking fake tan to bake. There are endless options out there for a quick sunkissed glow that will have your friends asking what exotic location you’ve just come back from. Or maybe you’ve used a gradual tanner so it’s SO natural looking that they just can’t put their finger on why you are looking so darn pretty today. I’m currently using the brand Skinny Tan which has a wide offering of products from instant tanners to gradual tanners and 7 day tanners.
4. LENGTHEN THOSE LASHES
For me having eyelash extensions has been the best thing ever for time saving. I no longer need to put mascara on or curl my lashes. I get my eyelashes done at Love Those Lashes and they have stores in Paddington and Hawthorn. It can be expensive for mums on a budget though – so here are my alternatives:
- Lash tint & lift. This will create a similar effect to lash extensions and will slash your time by not needing to curl lashes or apply mascara for 2-4 months.
- If you can’t fit the above into your budget – that’s ok! A quick lash curl and 2 coats of mascara will send you on your way looking the goods.
Longer lashes give the impression of brighter eyes – perfect for tired mummy’s.
5. TINT IT UP
Use a quality BB cream or tinted moisturiser to even out your skin tone and repel redness, without needing to apply foundation. My faves are:
- $ – Garnier Skin Naturals BB Cream
- $$ – Colorescience Tint Du Soleil
6. FILL EM’ IN & SHAPE EM’ UP
In recent years we have discovered the importance of brows and how they frame the fave.
Depending on your budget, powder tattoo brows are a worthwhile investment as they last up to 2 years. I recently had mine done at Queen Brows Melbourne (watch VLOG to see the process) and it has been the ultimate time saver. I used to fill in/paint my brows, but now I can literally walk out the door with perfect brows every time.
If this doesn’t fit your budget – buy a brow mascara. My fave is Benefit ‘Gimme Brow.’ All you have to do is brush it through your brows and your done – no skill required. If you don’t have time to get your eyebrows regularly waxed , hit up the toiletries section at your local Daiso store. There you can pick up a pack of eyebrow razors for under $5. You can use them to touch up stray hairs, but be warned – don’t go overboard!
7. BAG WATCH
Invest in a good concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation to banish those dark circles. These are my fave’s I’m currently using:
- $ – Innoxa Australia Colour Correcting Concealer Pen in Peach (to use under normal concealer)
- $ – Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser
8. POP ON GLOSS
I like to put a bright shade of lippy or lipgloss when I go out. Even if I’m not wearing any other makeup, it adds a pop of colour to my outfit and instantly brightens my mood. I usually keep mine in the car and apply it while stopped at the lights. My current fave lipgloss:
- $ Gilded Cage Charisma Lipgloss – Copper http://www.gildedcage.com
9. BRONZE ALL ROUND
Whilst applying my matte bronzer (no shimmer) on my cheek bones, I swipe it across my lids for some beautiful depth to my eyes without needing to pull out the eye shadows. My current fave:
- $$ – VANI-T Bronze Boheme Mineral Bronzer
10. MAINTAIN THE MANE
Get your hair regularly trimmed, use a quality hair treatment once a week (see my upcoming post on my hair routine for what I use that only needs 2 MINUTES), and invest in a good haircut that’s easy to style. On a tight budget? Use olive oil or coconut oil in your hair wrapped overnight. I highly recommend Cutters Lounge in Hawthorn if you’re in Melbourne.
